About ComSoc

This award is named in honor of Harold Sobol, a pioneer in the telecommunications industry and outstanding contributor and leader of the IEEE Communications Society. The award recognizes ComSoc members who have demonstrated exemplary services to the meetings and conferences of the Society.

Prize
Certificate, plaque, and an honorarium of US$1,000.

Eligibility
IEEE Communications Society members having demonstrated exemplary services to the meetings and conferences of the Society over a sustained period of time.

Basis for Judging
Evaluation of candidates is based on such factors as long-term service, significant contributions, strategic planning and financial success, etc. No more than one award will be given per year. The award will not be conferred in any given year if a suitable candidate is not identified.

Halim Yanikomeroglu

Halim Yanikomeroglu is a Chancellor’s Professor in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering at Carleton University, Canada; he is also the Director of Carleton-NTN (Non-Terrestrial Networks) Lab. He is a Fellow of IEEE, Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC), Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE), and Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (AAIA). He is a Distinguished Speaker for IEEE Communications Society and IEEE Vehicular Technology Society, and an Expert Panelist of the Council of Canadian Academies (CCA|CAC). Dr. Yanikomeroglu has coauthored 650+ papers including 320 published in 31 different IEEE journals; he also has 40 granted patents. He has supervised or hosted at Carleton 165+ postgraduate researchers; several of his former team members have become professors in Canada, US, UK, and around the world. Dr. Yanikomeroglu has served ComSoc in various capacities in the last 25 years. He is the Steering Committee Chair of ComSoc’s flagship wireless event, Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC). He served as the General Chair and Technical Program Chair of several IEEE events. He is a current member of a number of ComSoc committees and councils. He has also served in the editorial boards of various IEEE periodicals. Dr. Yanikomeroglu received several awards for his research, teaching, and service. He holds a PhD degree in electrical and computer engineering from University of Toronto.
