To ignite excitement in younger students and engage and help educate the next generation of engineers, ComSoc is now offering a variety of resources in STEM and Pre-University Education.
These offerings help students, their teachers and parents learn more about communication technologies and understand potential career paths in this area.

TryEngineering STEM Grant Program 2025 - Recipients Announced!
In 2025, ComSoc has again worked with the TryEngineering STEM Grant Program to facilitate local Pre-University STEM activities. Several proposals were received in the area of communications engineering and recipients have been selected. ComSoc is happy to announce that over $8200 in funding has been awarded to support the following programs:
- IoT Meets Space: Expanding STEM Horizons for Underserved Students at Selangor Through Satellite Prototyping // Malaysia Section Jt Chapter – Region 10
- IoT Unplugged: Smart Plant Guardians using Arduino // Toronto Section Chapter – Region 7
- Next-Gen Innovators: IoT and Embedded Systems Training for Secondary School Students // Federal University of Tech-Minna – Region 8
- STEM Series for Underprivileged Children – Pakistan // IEEE Student Activities Committee (SAC), Islamabad Section – Region 10
- Smart Switch Kit-Based Internet of Thing for Education // IEEE Malaysia Section – Region 10
- IoT Ignite: Spark the Future // IEEE Communications Society Kerala Chapter – Region 10

Training Session for Teachers in South Africa: Another GLOBECOM 2024 Success
At GLOBECOM 2024, hosted in Cape Town, South Africa, the ComSoc Pre-University STEM Education Working Group within the ComSoc Educational Services Board offered a teacher training session for 10 local middle and high school teachers in Cape Town. The event was also attended by volunteers and members who were interested in learning about these activities that can be done with school-age children.
The goal of this session was to promote STEM education about communications engineering technologies for Pre-University students by supplying teachers with introductory information about these technologies and providing the opportunity to to learn specific activities that they can do with their students in the classroom. Please add your event / activity information to vTools. When you are creating an event, be sure to choose Pre-U STEM Program in the Event Category and COM19 in the Society/Affinity Group section. You can also tag your event to make it easier for others to find. In the “DETAILS” section of the create event form, there is a field called “Tags/Keywords”. vTools automatically suggests some tags for you, but you can also enter custom tags for your event, e.g. #ComSoc or #communications. The more tags you add, the easier it will be for others to search for and find your event. It’s important that you record the event with COM19 in the Society/Affinity group and Pre-U STEM Program in the event category so that your event will appear in the below calendar feed.
